cow heart DISSECTION
On Wednesday June 3,2015 we had a nurse come to STEAM to dissect dissect a cow heart that Mrs.J and Mr.Vince got from a butchers shop. Each class got to look a the heart and see the aorta, the left and right ventricle, and the left and right atrium. We explored a lot of areas we can't se inside inside of us. some kids even put there fingers in the aorta, ventricles, and atrium. A lot of kids thought it was fun and a good experience to learn about the heart.
PROGRAMMING ROBOTS
Right now in Project Lead The Way we are learning to program robots using MODKIT which is a program allowing you to place commands (blocks). These blocks are made of coding which you don't see on the block these codes are what control the robots. When you are done with the program you connect a black USB cord to the computer and the robot. Some people have almost finished MODKIT part 4. Others have struggled getting the cords in the right ports.
The human body
Project Update #1
We are starting to draw our systems out onto paper in class. Different groups are drawing different systems, my group has drawn the brain, and the spine because we are the nervous system group. On the outside of our tracing we wrote facts about are system. Soon we will be doing other things with the systems so stay tuned!

Project Overview
We are studying the human body, a topic that all students must know about. We are tracing one of the people in our group and representing how each group's topic affects the human body directly and indirectly. We are using our creative minds to find amazing ways to represent the human body. We are learning about cardiovascular (The heart and veins), muscular (Your muscles), nervous (Nerves and the brain), immune (How you fight diseases), digestive (Your intestinal systems), respiratory (Your lungs), and the skeletal systems (Your skeletons). You will be able to see it at the final expo!

The nervous system is the system that your brain falls under. It is a closed system unlike the digestive system. There are many different nerves in the body and the brain is probably the most common. The brain is the boss of the body and your emotions. Your nerves also control your reactions this is how it works, when you touch something the nerves in that part of our body send a message to your brain and your brain decides what to do next, and thats how it works!
The immune system is the elaborate system that protects you from viruses and diseases that could hurt your body. White blood cells (leukocytes) grow in the body they divide into two main types: B cells and T cells. Some cells grow into large eating cells that destroy colonies of viruses, while others attach on to the virus to spread awareness to the rest of the body. But, Whatever type of cell it is, they are all a vital part of your bodies health. Another type of cell is macrophage it gets rid of cells that have been infected by germs.Allergies are when your immune system mistakes a harmless object or substance like medicines or types of food for something harmful and try to get rid of it. Sometimes your immune cells accidentally fight good cells this can be the affect of some immune system diseases. Diabetes is a disease when your body doesn't make enough insulin and blood sugar that is too high.
The digestive system is a big system that takes up about half of the body. When we eat our saliva mixes in to our food and this is the first step of the braking down of food. The bite travels down through the esophagus to the stomach. Our stomach takes 2-4 hours to digest the food. After the food is turned into paste the small intestine aborbs the nutrients through the jejunum and ileum. After this, the food goes into the rectum witch sends a signal to the brain to see if we can use the bathroom. If we can, the anus seperates the human wast between the solid, gas, and liquid.
The skeleton is made up of many bones to support the body. Joints help with movement there are certain types of joints, the joint in you elbow is like a hinge it can only move one way. In the wrist is a joint called the ball joint it can move in all directions. The rib cage and the cranium (skull) protect vital organs like the brain, heart and lungs. Blood cells are made in the bone marrow in kids the bones that have bone marrow vary. In adults the bones that have bone marrow are less varied like in the ribs.
The Circulatory System
The circulatory system is made up your heart and veins. Your blood cells cary nutrients and air thought out your body. When eat food it goes thought the digestive system. In the small intestine are things call villi. Villi suck out nutrients in your food and the blood cells cary it thought out your body. In the large intestine it suck out the water in your food. Your whole body need this stuff to keep you alive. Without water and nutrients you would be dead.

life-sized biogr aphy
Every student in the fifth grade chose an important person from the Revolutionary War time period to study. Then we created a life-size model of that person. We searched for their height, then we compared our historical character's height with our classmate's heights. We also researched what they wore. Using the heights of our classmates, we traced life-sized models, creating our historical person, and decorating them according to the time-period. we stared by tracing people that are about the same hight as are revolutionary war people and then adding clothes. We also worked in art class to draw the face of the person we chose. All of the faces have the look of looking into the distance. We then added the faces to our life size people drawings. Some people have started on the color of the skin and hair, some people are adding more details, like adding real clothing.
the 13 colonies
The original colonies are Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. We have to write three of four types of writing about the new english colonies. The four styles were; Narratives, (Where we wrote a story in the setting of the time.) Informational essays, (Information down to the bone.) Persuasive essays, (Trying to convince our reader about an opinion on topic.) And a Poem.
And we had to write something about a specific topic on the colonies. The colonial writing was in between the times of 1600 and 1779. Here are some examples:

Map of where the Colonists landed
In fifth grade we made a mural with pictures that we cut out. The pictures were made to represent life in the 13 colonies. We did houses, animals, people, fences and many more cool things. Also we made a time line with estimated populations and important events. Check out the videos below to see how we did it.

In the fifth grade we are reviewing science units we did in kindergarden to fourth grade. Some groups have made circuits, race tracks, booklets, lightbulbs and posters. Once we've finished reviewing the fifth grade will do a mini expo where we show what we learned.
Educreations
Educreations is an app on our IPads that we are using to explain our learning. In this app, we can write with our fingers and record audio at the same time. It's helpful for thinking through the learning we're doing. It's also a useful tool for teaching others how to solve a problem or just to show them how we're thinking. When we solved the problem. Here is an example of an Educreation about Educreations by Danielle.
Non-fiction Writing Project
Each class is typing non fiction handouts for the expo. They are dividing into groups each group will print out many handouts. Some of these projects are about medieval history like, the history of pumpkin chunkin', trebuchets and more!
Trebuchets
Here at STEAM we built model trebuchets big and small so we could learn about the physics of motion while having a fun time with this DIY project. We tested different projectiles, learned physics terminology, used different counterweights, while having fun and learning important lessons.
Marble Machines
Our whole grade made amazing marble machines. It took everyone about 1 to 3 hours to make our machines. After everyone brought their marble machines to school we started to present them.
